Benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is one of the commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of acne. It is available as a gel, lotion, cleanser and cream. Many of the popular lotions, soaps, gels and creams available on the market today contain benzoyl peroxide for acne control. P. acne, acne infection causing bacteria is destroyed by the use of benzoyl peroxide. This bacterium is present in all of us, but when the sebaceous glands become clogged with sebum, it creates problems and leads to acne. As benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria, excess sebum dries off. This can sometimes cause irritation and dry skin. Thus, the use of it must be followed by a good moisturizer. Benzoyl peroxide is known to increase the efficacy of drugs such as erythromycin and clindamycin Therefore; it is used in combination preparations for acne.

Clindamycin for acne treatment : Clindamycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic which is very useful as an oral antibiotic for acne, but it is mostly used in topical form, which has been shown to be safe and well tolerated. It helps to destroy acne causing bacteria and work as an anti-inflammatory thus reduces inflammation. It may cause side effects such as skin dryness and irritation of the skin. The major side effect of clindamycin therapy is that it can lead to serious intestinal infection called pseudo membranous colitis is caused by the bacterium Clostridium difficile.

Tetracycline for acne treatment : Tetracycline is a commonly prescribed antibiotic for the treatment of acne, in particular to reduce papules and pustules. Inflammatory comedo that resembles a small red bump on the skin is known as a papule and resembles a whitehead with a ring of redness around it is a pustule. The usual dose starts with 500-1000 mg twice daily, which was reduced to 250 mg twice daily as improvement occurs and then abandoned. For severe acne, higher doses may be prescribed. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take tetracycline because it can affect the development of baby's bones and teeth leading to skeletal defects. Also, it should not be given to children less than 9 years.

Synthetic derivatives of tetracycline, minocycline and doxycycline are also commonly used antibiotics for best acne treatment.

Minocycline for acne treatment : Minocycline is used for decades to treat acne, acne pustule particular type. Generally, the initial dose is 50-100 mg twice daily. Dizziness, nausea and vomiting are the side effects of this antibiotic. Sometimes prolonged intake can lead to skin or tooth discoloration.

Doxycycline for acne treatment : Doxycycline is an effective antibiotic used for the treatment of inflammatory acne. People who can not tolerate or respond to erythromycin or tetracycline are often given doxycycline. The initial dose is 50-100 mg twice daily. It should not be consumed on an empty stomach as it can cause severe nausea. Doxycycline may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.

Erythromycin for acne treatment : Erythromycin is one of the commonly used antibiotics for the treatment of acne and has many advantages over tetracycline antibiotic. Erythromycin has anti-inflammatory properties which work by reducing redness, lesions and kill bacteria. It is generally prescribed the dosage of 250 to 500 mg twice daily, but the dose may vary depending on the type used. It can lead to minor side effects such as stomach upset or nausea, but it can be used by pregnant women. Topical erythromycin is effective in treating acne because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Combination of topical erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide is also very effective in treating acne as the two antimicrobial agents work together in this case. Like other acne antibiotics, erythromycin can also cause skin dryness and irritation of the skin. To reduce bacterial resistance that may occur with the use of antibiotics, it is best to be used as directed.

You may need to take antibiotics for acne treatment for a longer period in case of severe acne. Your skin care regime should include cleaning the skin with a mild soap once a day, which helps to remove excess sebum and dead skin cells. Also, avoid harsh rubbing, touching and squeezing acne prevention. Squeezing and picking the affected area will aggravate acne. With antibiotics for acne treatment, you must follow the simple skin care to get rid of annoying acne.

  1. Antibiotics do work great but I found that prolong use actually weakens the effects. Bacteria adapt quickly. You are correct in getting it treated right away. I would go for prevention of Sebum build up to keep the bacteria from enjoying my skin. I prefer the oral treatments due to some topical don't get down in the pores deep enough.
